Wayne State and Lyft partner on rideshare zone, mural and (Park)ing Day event
Wayne State University and transportation network Lyft are partnering to bring a designated pickup, drop-off zone to Woodward | Warren Park. Located on Hancock at Woodward, the zone is already accessible through the Lyft app and can be selected under the name "Woodward | Warren Park."
"Lyft is thrilled to partner with Wayne State University on the school's first rideshare zone, located at Woodward | Warren Park," shares Jay Dumaswala, General Manager for the Lyft region that covers Detroit. "This is a big step in making rideshare convenient for students and faculty, as well as area residents and visitors traveling to and from campus. Our goal is to help the community experience all that the campus has to offer, while ensuring a seamless pickup and drop-off."
While some signage is in place, Wayne State and Lyft plan to make visual improvements to the space over the next few months. A bench in the company's signature pink color and additional wayfinding signage will be installed in the coming weeks to make the zone especially easy to find.
The largest visual change to the space will be in the form of a new mural in the alley that connects the pickup, drop-off zone to Woodward | Warren Park, located on the back side of the Wayne State University Press building. The mural, sponsored by Lyft, will be designed and painted by Wayne State students Anne Armbruster, Saylem Bryant, Inna Golovata, Beth Maddens, Roy Sproule and Jeni Wheeler.
The group is led by Margi Weir, Associate Professor of Painting and Drawing. "When I learned of this opportunity for students to partner with Lyft and Wayne State to create a mural, I knew it was an incredibly important learning opportunity for these painting students. They are responsible for designing, budgeting, and painting this mural. It will be a significant addition to their portfolios as they become artists after graduation. And it will contribute visual interest to the campus and the Wayne State community." The transformation will take place throughout the fall season and be unveiled during Midtown's popular Noel Night festival.
To celebrate the new partnership, Lyft is hosting an event for the community on a day known as (Park)ing Day, an international celebration of parks. All are invited to Woodward | Warren Park between 11 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. on Friday, September 20 for complimentary food, music, swag, and more with the download of the Lyft app.
To encourage the community to use the new designated area, Lyft is offering a discount of 25% off two rides to or from the Woodward | Warren Park pickup, drop-off zone. Use code WOODWARDWARREN19. Valid until December 31, 2019. Max of $5 savings per ride. Subject to Lyft's Terms of Service.
