The Detroit Institute of Arts is located on Woodward Ave. in Midtown Detroit. It has one of the largest and most significant art collections in the United States.

Wayne State is excited to welcome students, faculty and staff to campus, our Midtown neighborhood and Detroit this fall. A city rich in arts, culture and entertainment, Detroit offers something for everyone. We asked ten Warriors: “What is your favorite Detroit spot?” Here is what they had to say:

  1. “Two of my favorite places in Detroit, outside of the WSU campus, are Ford Field and the LCA,” shared Brandon Gross, assistant vice president in the Office of the Provost. “I have the honor of being part of the Lions and Pistons gameday stats crews and whether it is in the press box or courtside, I love the energy these teams and Detroit fans bring to our community!”

  2. “The best grilled cheese in the city can be found on Cass Avenue inside the unassuming Monger’s Provisions,” said Michelle Gardner, a university counselor in the Office of International Students and Scholars (OISS). “Show your OneCard and save while supporting a local business that provides sandwiches, charcuterie boards and a large assortment of gourmet items.”

  3. “I think my favorite place in Detroit is Iggy’s Eggies,” shared Sebastian Fuller, a fifth-year student studying biomedical engineering and Asian studies. “It’s a walk-up stall breakfast sandwich place downtown. It’s so cute, and they always have fresh-squeezed OJ.”

  4. The Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit (MOCAD) is a great place to discover local and international artists, listen to live music, grab a drink, learn about local programs, and even study,” said Andrea Daldin, a current MSW student. “Their exhibitions change and get refreshed seasonally, and their café is top-notch for a quiet afternoon of reading or a lively evening of socializing.”

  5. “My favorite hidden gem in Detroit is a place called Arts and Scraps on the East Side,” explained Grace Doss, Digital Marketing Manager at TechTown. “It’s a non-profit thrift store that sells all kinds of craft supplies for a fraction of it’s original cost. They also have loads of programs for the community.”

  6. The Detroit Institute of Arts is a world-class museum with amazing exhibits throughout the year, but it isn't just art,” shared Kelly Kozlowski, assistant vice president for economic development. “The museum is also home to the Detroit Film Theatre, where you can check out art films, documentaries and special themed programs in a fabulous 1920s vintage auditorium. Every February/March, the theater screens the short films nominated for Oscars, and it's perfect for a movie night out with friends.”

  7. “One of my favorite places in Detroit is Hockeytown Café,” mentioned Miriam DeWolf, a senior honors biology student. “It has a super fun interior with motorcycles and hockey memorabilia, and I am a big Red Wings fan myself.”

  8. “My favorite Detroit spot is Belle Isle,” shared Jacob Ulbrich, a senior honors computer science student. “It offers great views of both the city and Canada. The beach is also a perfect spot for a picnic or group hangout!”

  9. Nicole Jackson, director of real estate and asset management, recommends Detroit’s Eastern Market. “I love all of the fresh produce and vendor offerings. Warriors should check it out as a possible alternative to the grocery store,” mentioned Jackson.

  10. “I love visiting the Detroit Riverfront,” said Brianna Bacon, a recent urban studies graduate. “I appreciate the various attractions and public spaces everyone can enjoy. I really like visiting Gabriel Richard Park because that space always has event programming for people of all ages.”
