Free one-month regional bus passes for WSU students

Wayne State is pleased to partner with the Detroit Department of Transportation (DDOT) and SMART to offer 1,000 FREE one-month REGIONAL bus passes to interested students. The passes are good for unlimited rides on DDOT and SMART between 10/1 and 10/31, giving students the freedom to experience Midtown, Downtown and neighborhoods around the region.

Passes are available on a first come, first served basis via DOSO, Housing, The W Food Pantry and The High Program. Students will be required to provide a Corq QR code (download Corq here!) or Wayne State Access ID.

DDOT operates buses within the city. SMART operates buses within Oakland, Macomb and Wayne counties-including limited-stop FAST buses along key routes including Woodward Avenue. A base one-way DDOT fare is $1.50. A base one-way SMART fare is $2.00. A regional monthly pass (regularly $49.50) gives pass holders unlimited access to both DDOT and SMART.

Wayne State recently established WayneRides, a "one-stop shop" to help promote walking, biking and public transportation. WayneRides' programming is coordinated by a student Transportation Ambassador, a position currently held by Kristina Curtiss. A lifelong Michigander, Kristina moved to Detroit from Traverse City without a car, and has become passionate about advocating for mobility accessibility across the state.

The Transportation Ambassador role is a partnership between Wayne State's Dean of Students Office (DOSO), Office of Economic Development (OED), and Parking and Transportation Services. "Transportation access is a key contributor to student success," said Dr. David Strauss, Dean of Students. "There are many excellent transportation options in southeast Michigan and having a campus Transportation Ambassador has enabled us to communicate these resources and raise awareness of transportation needs and services."

The goal of WayneRides is to help increase Warrior knowledge and use of local mobility options including DDOT and SMART, MoGo (bike share), the QLINE (streetcar) and Zipcar (car-sharing) via office hours, information sessions and group rides. Wayne State students, faculty, staff and neighbors can learn more about WayneRides by visiting the WayneRides webpage, Instagram and Facebook.
