September 25, 2013 --
Union Street Detroit, a beloved staple of the Midtown dining scene, has announced a new chef and menu.
Ginger and George Barris purchased the Woodward Avenue bar and restaurant last year. Ginger Barris has 20 years of experience working in Midtown, starting across the street as manager and bartender at the Majestic Theatre Center. The couple announced Wednesday new chef David Hubbard Jr. will debut a revamped menu on Oct. 1.
Hubbard has worked at several fine-dining restaurants - Coach Insignia, No. VI Chophouse, Rugby Grille and the Grill at the Ritz-Carlton Dearborn. His new bill of fare at Union Street will include seafood like shucked oysters, lobster lollipops and fish tacos, along with deviled eggs (they are showing up on a lot of menus now, aren't they?), pizza and more.
Union Street's famous dragon eggs - hot sauce-covered chicken stuffed with Gorgonzola cheese, battered and deep fried - will remain.
The new owners also have added a catering director, Rhonda Richter, to help develop that aspect of the restaurant business.
Union Street, at 4145 Woodward in Detroit, is open for lunch and dinner daily.
