Wayne State University joins the Commuter Challenge 2017
Wayne State University is excited to announce its support for the Detroit Commuter Challenge in 2017. The Challenge encourages single-passenger drivers to try a more sustainable and healthy mode of travel to work during the month of May.
As the seventh-largest employer in Detroit, Wayne State strives to lead the region in efforts to reduce carbon dioxide emissions from commuting trips by 175,000 pounds in the month of May. This is equivalent to the weight of 33 cars. By reducing the vehicle miles driven alone, air pollution is reduced in Southeast Michigan.
A critical aspect of Wayne State University’s mission is to positively impact the local community and be a leader in the revitalization of Detroit. The university is an investor in numerous projects to improve its campus and Midtown, including transportation services and infrastructure such as Detroit Bike Share and the QLINE operated by M-1 RAIL. These and other projects such as Zipcar, the Midtown Greenway Loop, public bike repair stands, electric vehicle charging stations and Wayne State’s free campus shuttle increase mobility options for the campus and surrounding community, enhancing connectivity and quality of life.
The Detroit Commuter Challenge is just one more way for Wayne State to incentivize the campus community and neighborhood to get involved in earth-friendly initiatives. The Challenge runs through the entire month of May (May 1-31).
